PENALTY SHOOTOUT

Best of 5 against Vex the keeper — then guard your own goal. Or take the 60-second challenge and see how many you can bury.

About Penalty Shootout

Penalty Shootout is VRMatch's first soccer game — the arcade had shooters, racers, fighters, and sixteen other sports, but never the world's game. It had to be done properly: not a coin flip dressed as football, but a penalty you can actually read. The keeper, Vex, commits to his side before you strike — his lean is a real tell, wide and honest in the first round and down to a twitch by the fifth. His one weakness is time: give him a slow ball and he can shuffle a zone across mid-flight, so the firm strike into the corner is the penalty that beats him, and the lazy daisy-cutter down the middle is the one he eats for breakfast.

The shootout runs both ways, the way a real one does. After your five kicks you swap gloves and stand in goal yourself: the CPU striker gives you no tell at all, only your read of left, center, or right, and a genuinely placed corner can beat even the perfect guess — which is only fair, since yours can too. The clinch math is real: the moment the trailing side cannot catch up, the whistle goes, no dead kicks played out. Level after five rounds and it is sudden death, one pair of kicks at a time, against a keeper who by then is at his quickest and quietest. And when you just want the rush without the chess, 60 Seconds counts how many penalties you can bury in a minute while Vex steps up a level every three goals — the same format as the arcade's beloved 60-second basketball shootout, which is where this game takes its cue.

Everything here is drawn, not emoji: a night stadium under floodlights with a living crowd, mowing bands on the pitch, a striker with a real run-up and a keeper who dives in full frames, net ripple when you find the side netting. It plays with touch, mouse, or keyboard, sound is on by default, and your best 60-second total and your shootout record live in the arcade's save and stats on this device. Free, like everything on VRMatch — no download, no signup, no ads in your face.

Can the keeper always be beaten?

Yes — honestly, not magically. A firm shot placed into the far half of a corner zone beats him essentially every time, because he has committed somewhere and a struck ball gives him no time to adjust. What you cannot do is repeat the same soft shot down the middle: he camps the center, saves those at a high rate, and adjusts into neighboring zones against anything under-struck. The risk is yours to choose: corners score, but aim one too fine at full power and the scatter puts it past the post. The dashed ring around your target is the true scatter at your current power — the game never lies to you about your own aim.

How does sudden death work?

If the score is level after both sides have taken five kicks, the shootout continues one pair of kicks at a time. As soon as one pair ends with the scores different, that side wins. The keeper is at his highest level throughout sudden death — smallest tell, fastest adjustment — and the score strip keeps growing dots for as long as it takes.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Penalty Shootout is built phone-first: the whole game is one thumb — press, drag, hold, release — with big dive buttons for your turns in goal, and it runs in any modern browser with nothing to install. It also plays fine with a mouse or the arrow keys and spacebar on a computer.
